The new Tocqueville, not.

BHL was speaking exactly a week ago at the common wealth club. I was supposed to attend the Food Blogger panel, wearing my SFist Gastronomique hat, which was at the same time, and ended up hanging out at CPMC doing something totally different.

Anyhow, back to BHL: I was curious to hear him, as he has the style of the thinker pinned down, but one sometimes feels he lacks the substance. Well, short of seeing him in person or reading his book, here is the review of it in the NY Times. Ouch. It's by Garrison Keillor, the humorist and NPR host show, and he just tears BHL another you know what. Of course, Garrison falls in the same trap as BHL: As always with French writers, Lévy is short on the facts, long on conclusions. Garrison himself facts sample is one Levy book, and the reach of his own conclusion a bit too wide for my taste. So I'm relieved I did not miss much with BHL on Monday. As for that food blogger panel...
