Phil Bronstein: Dem hater.

I have withheld commenting on Phil Bronstein's blog for a while. The guy has no responsibility at the Chron anymore, besides this "at large" gig, and he hasn't had an interesting idea in a long time. Typical blog post is: "Gavin is an absent mayor, ha, ha," or "the press has been giving a pass to Obama for too long." Actually, that's not true, Phil also manages to weave in his past as an investigative journalist. I went to the Philipines, and I was very courageous, and I went to Jonestown and I was very courageous, and good for you Phil, you were very courageous, but a little humility goes a long way.

So I've been cringing at Phil's antics for a while. Today, we get this gem: Phil makes the case that Obama is behind SC governor Mark Sanford infidelities. Yeah, it's pretty ridiculous on its face, and not worth commenting about. Phil can wave it off as pocking Dems, it's all in good jest.

More interesting, is this sentence:
however, this was just another "microcosm of society," a tawdry friends-with-benefits family scandal to add to the Clinton, Edwards, Spizter, McGreevey, et al, ad nauseam roster.

Anything these guys have in common? They are all Democrats. You know, John Ensign, Larry Craig, Mark Foley, those are all holier-than-thou Republican blabbing about the sanctity of marriage, whose shenanigans are more recent than any of the Democrats mentioned. But Phil is very selective, isn't he.

If there is one thing that's bipartisan, is infidelities. And one could argue that, as long as Democrats don't wrap themselves in family values like there Republican counterparts, they are exempt of the hypocrisy charge and can do whatever they want in the bedroom. But in Phil's world, it's the opposite.

Phil cares about informing you less than having dinner with uber-Republicans Charlotte Schultz and Dede Wilsey. But didn't he tell you? Once, in the past, he was courageous.

The Chron's Common Sense

The guy spent 14 years wrongfully accused in prison and now, he'll be able to go get himself a venti frappucino at Starbucks. Four buck fifty, that's about 30 cents per year in the clink. Hey, maybe 14 years ago, five dollars was a big deal.

He may actually get $4.5 millions, but millions, shmillions, who can tell the difference? The picture is from the front page at SFGate. The Chron's new motto: you just can't trust our news®.
